Artist Statement

My art is animated by several energies flowing from three sources, passion and love of my homeland, my architectural education, and my interactions with people.

My Haitian figurative artwork are images of known or relatable personages set in their everyday routine. These paintings exude over pigmented colors due to the piercing sunshine of Haiti, with the omnipresent element of the smile of a child that I try to capture as a universal welcome. An unanswered question stems from my early paintings, “why is a child born into poverty or wealth?”. The quest for this answer fuels my passion for my homeland that is forever present in my soul and the canvas is the sole platform to express the essence of these emotions.

Creating something from nothing drives my abstract art. It is the result of an exciting architectural education, rich with metaphors, parti, gesture, connection, separation, linear, detached, geometry, mass void, spatial experience and more. My architecture education included a strong hands-on training in process and theory. The aspect that I enjoy most is creating a functional space which can be exciting in color while layering whatever media is available. Basic geometric shape, splatter of paint, palette knives, masking tapes, are the tools of this exploration that leads to my inner child taking over for two to three hours. I love that there is no code, no guidelines, no jurisdiction. The process is a freedom I cannot explain that emerges as a dance between art and architecture.

As I expand my artistry into portraits, I have discovered that a person’s facial features have the most amazing lines which presents a challenge for me. In comparison to my architectural background, l scale a person’s face like a building. My love for architecture will translate into making portraits as my way of saying, “I love you.” Whether the work is commission or not, when engaged in a portrait session I am always wondering what is currently behind those eyes that I have done repeatedly to capture the emotion of the person. I am immersed in positive thoughts about this person as almost as it is like a prayer. The beaux-arts techniques are my pillars that I always strive for as each painting is an exploration of never-ending learning.
