MikabenMikaben’s life can be the open window to the healing of Haiti. We have had a few opportunities to be united, and now more than ever, the momentum has dissipated or was extinguished by a lack of solidarity or shared vision. Mikaben’s departure is another moment when Haitian people have come together without the effect of natural disasters (January 12th. 2010). Unnatural disasters like the one Haiti is currently living in are the new normal.
The unification shown during the death of Mikaben is unprecedented. The last time unity, joy, and pride were on our agenda as a nation was our reaction when Manno Sanon scored in the world cup in 1974. Mikaben’s outpouring of love joins the greats of entertainers of history of Michael Jackson – Bob Marley – Ti Manno – Kobe Bryant. If we must say, it is exceptional for a young Haitian who is not connected like these celebrities have been memorialized and honored in every corner of Haiti for his craft; this is UNITY in ACTION.
Living your physical being has a word, meaning Mikaben actions and ways intended to manifest UNION. Being tormented by the situation of the musician right, by the condition of Haiti’s youth, he created a foundation named “TI SOUF.” It is an act of leadership rooted in our ancestors. He didn’t focus on who created the problem; he stepped into the solution mode.
Now the celebration of life is complete. We wipe our tears away, sing his song, laugh at his jokes, and watch his interviews; after all, we will never stop watching them. This is his legacy at work in our life. As he said to Ti LION, “mwen fin travay.” I can help thinking about the song “Only the good die young” by Billy Joel and “Where do we go from here” by Alicia Keys. When do we start? This a question that we all wonder about every day, a question we all have come to admit that we are at the source of these inequities, and we need to do something.
Let's start acknowledging October 15th as the start-up day of a new era.
Could we call October 15th youth united day in Haiti with the spirit of Mikaben?
Let's choose October 15th to be youth entrepreneur day.
October 15th is the day an industrial reach over and give a scholarship in the name of Mikaben.
To the People.
Mikaben’s death offered the spiritual setting for the government to create a forum to enact on the shared vision everyone is talking about. In this new era, we are witnessing the death of a versatile artist of our time. His work will forever be engraved in history Haiti’s history. Why not include Mikaben in a sentence with Toussaint Louverture? After all, they died on the same land regardless of the circumstances. They both fought for the good of their compatriots. “Ayiti se’ “is the new hymnal that will be as strong if not stronger than “Haiti Cheri pi bel payi pase ou nan point.”. It is an opportunity to anchor the youth with a union for the common good. Could we create a politic of the well-being of a nation from the text of Mikaben and many other artists?

To the Parents.
You’re living a moment that is equally sad and joyful; the sadness is that Mikaben is gone, and the circumstances are tragic, which amplifies the sorrow.; however, the joy will last forever. The memories are well-documented. Thank God for living in this new day of technology. No one knew that your son could be the messiah of a nation; he was chosen for this work. He came to save his country, and God gave you this mission as he gave Joseph and Mary the task of the birth of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Benjamin, Mikaben, the fruit of your wound is blessed and sacred. I can’t help thinking of Michael English’s song “Mary Did you know?”, a very peaceful music I invite you to listen to in times of sadness. It will bring peace and pride to your heart.
To Vanessa
You are also a reminder that Haiti’s strength and redemption are in the hand of the Haitian woman. When Mikaben told you, you were his last stop. He meant that he arrived in his comfort zone to focus on the work he was destined to do. You are the source of all he created during this marriage. He didn’t leave you with a mission, but you have many stories to tell these kids. Your strength and resilience will come from above; Mikaben, your angel, will forever shine the light on you.
